Why the right brake pad matters more on a kart than on a car
A kart has one job the driver notices more than anything else: stop when you tell it to, and be predictable while doing it. Most modern racing karts run a single rear brake — a hydraulic disc squeezed by one caliper. There is no ABS, no servo, no second axle sharing the load. The pad you fit is the entire friction interface between you and the tarmac.
That means three things:
- Compound choice sets pedal feel. A softer, grippier compound gives you a firmer initial bite; a harder compound gives you more consistent feel deep into a race stint as temperatures rise. Neither is "better" — they suit different drivers, weights and tracks.
- Fitment is caliper-specific, not chassis-marketing-specific. Manufacturers cluster pads by the caliper family a chassis was built around. "OTK BSD" or "Kellgate GTK" tells us far more about which pad fits than "2022 Tony Kart Racer 401".
- Small parts, big consequences. A pad going in worn or badly bedded can cost you a race, a rotor, or a shunt. It's worth taking ten minutes to get this right.

How kart brake systems work (the short version)
Rear-only, hydraulic disc. The overwhelming majority of adult single-speed karts (Rotax, IAME X30, OK, KZ direct-drive rear brake variants) run a single hydraulic disc on the rear axle, actuated by a master cylinder on the pedal box. Squeeze the pedal, fluid moves, caliper pistons push the pads onto the disc.
Cadet karts (950 chassis) use scaled-down versions of the same rear-only hydraulic system, with lighter master cylinders and smaller discs sized for lower kart weight and lower speed.
Front-and-rear systems appear on some shifter and DD2 categories where the rules and speeds warrant it — here you have separate front and rear circuits, sometimes with a bias adjuster. If your kart has front brakes, always match front and rear pad condition and compound where the manufacturer offers matched fronts.
Historic and legacy karts may run cable-operated drum or band brakes. This guide is aimed at hydraulic disc systems, which is what all current OTK, CRG, Kart Republic, Parolin, Birel ART, Synergy and TB-Kart chassis use.
The two things worth understanding about your system before you buy pads:
- Which caliper family is fitted? OTK BSD (current), OTK 2004–2016 (older style), Kellgate GTK, CRG VEN 05/CR1, Kart Republic/Parolin, TB-Kart/X-Kart, Synergy/Birel ART/CompKart — these are the mainstream families and pads are sold to fit each one.
- Which disc size and thickness? Freeline-based systems in particular sell pads by physical dimensions (56 × 55 mm, 90 × 16 mm, 100 × 8 mm etc.). If you run a Freeline caliper, dimensions decide the pad.

Pad compounds — what actually changes when you change compound
Two brands dominate what we sell for modern chassis: Precision (a chassis-specific range covering most OTK, CRG, Kart Republic, Parolin, Synergy, TB-Kart, Kellgate, Birel and CompKart applications) and Freeline (dimension-based, favoured on many older and Freeline-caliper systems).
Precision — three-tier compound system
Precision offers up to three compound options for each chassis application, using consistent naming so you can compare like-for-like:

How to think about it: Standard suits most drivers. Move to Hard if you're a heavier senior driver, or your circuit has one long dominant braking zone that puts real heat into the disc. Move to Ultimate if you're chasing outright bite in short sprint sessions and are happy to change pads more often. None of these is universally "best" — the right one is the one that matches your kart, your weight, and the track in front of you.
Compound availability varies by chassis — some fit families offer all three, some just Standard and Ultimate, some just Standard. Availability is called out on each product page.
Freeline — pad materials by dimension
Freeline sells pads by physical dimension and material family, rather than by chassis name. The compound families you'll see on our site:
- Standard / RQ (organic-style) — everyday compound. Consistent, kind to discs, appropriate for club use. Example: Freeline 40 × 38 RQ Black.
- Sintered (Synt) — metallic race compound that holds friction at very high disc temperatures. Longer life at heat, but harder on discs. Examples: Freeline 40 × 38 Sintered 24HH, 100 × 8 Sintered, 135 × 10 Sintered.
- FDB3 — mid-range friction/wear compound found on 56 × 15 pads for older Freeline systems.
Sintered vs. organic — the trade-off in one line. Sintered pads shrug off heat and give a hard pedal at temperature, but wear discs faster and can feel wooden when cold. Organic-style pads are more forgiving cold, kinder to your disc, but softer as heat builds. Choose sintered for high-heat circuits and heavier categories; choose organic for everyday club use and cadet-through-junior weights unless you have a specific reason not to.

A note on compatibility. Chassis manufacturers refresh caliper designs every few years and marketing chassis names ("Racer 401", "KR2") map imperfectly to caliper generations. Our application names describe the caliper family the pad fits — not a specific chassis year. If you're unsure, cross-check against the product page's fit notes, or send us a photo of the caliper before you order. Never guess on brake fitment — ask us first.
Signs your pads need attention
You don't need a workshop to spot worn pads. Look for any of these before or after a session:
- Longer stopping distance or a softer initial bite compared with your usual reference point on track. This is the most reliable early sign.
- Squeal or grinding under braking. A light squeal on cold-cold pads can be normal; consistent noise under load is not.
- Thickness under about 3–4 mm of friction material measured across the pad face. Below that, plan to change. If backing plate is exposed anywhere, the pad is done and the disc is at risk.
- Uneven wear across the pad face, or a big taper from leading to trailing edge. Often points to a sticky caliper piston or worn pad-support hardware rather than a pad problem — investigate before you fit fresh pads.
- Glazing — a shiny, hard, glassy surface on the pad. Usually caused by overheating with insufficient bedding, or by leaving pads sitting hot on a hot disc. Glazed pads bite poorly and can often be recovered with a careful re-bed, but if the glazing keeps coming back, replace them.
- Sponginess in the pedal — this is usually a fluid or air problem (see maintenance below), but very worn pads combined with tired hardware can add to it.
If you're preparing a kart for a race weekend, a five-minute inspection — pop the disc cover, measure both pads, spin the disc by hand and watch for even light drag — pays for itself many times over.
Bedding-in new pads
Fresh pads and often fresh discs need heat cycles to transfer an even film of pad material onto the disc surface. Skip this step and you can glaze the pads on the very first hard stop.
The karting reality. Unlike a car, you can't do a long road-style bed-in procedure. On a kart, you build heat in short, deliberate stints. The routine below is a sensible starting point for most current-spec hydraulic disc systems — specific kart models and track conditions can shift the detail (colder circuits, cadet-weight karts, and heavy senior categories all behave differently), so treat this as a framework and check your chassis manufacturer's bedding-in note if you have one.
- Warm-up laps. Do two or three laps building brake pressure gradually — light dabs only, no hard stops. You're heating the pads without shocking them.
- Progressive loading. For the next three to five laps, use progressively firmer brake pressure into your main braking zone. Aim for firm-but-not-maximum stops. Do not lock the wheels. Do not hold the pedal on after the corner exit.
- Cool-down. After that block, do one or two laps with only light brake use so the disc cools evenly while it's spinning. Do not park up on the grid straight from hard braking — a hot pad sitting on a hot disc is the fastest way to glaze pads and warp new discs.
- Check. Off the kart, both pads should show an even matt-grey friction surface transfer across their full face. Uneven transfer or bright shiny spots mean re-check hardware and repeat the last two steps.
Do not bed pads on a rolling road, a stand, or by "burning them in" off the kart. Heat must come from actual disc contact under motion, or the film won't transfer evenly. Maintenance — the small stuff that saves races
Brake pads live inside a system that's only as good as its worst-maintained part. A short checklist you can run before every race weekend:
Fluid. - Kart hydraulic systems use DOT 4 brake fluid in the vast majority of current-spec kart master cylinders — but not all. Some systems specify a different DOT rating (or an OEM-specific fluid), and mixing incompatible fluids can damage seals or compromise pedal feel. Always confirm the specification stamped on your master cylinder cap and in your chassis manual before topping up or changing fluid. If in doubt, ask us or your chassis dealer before you buy. - Fluid absorbs water over time, which lowers its boiling point and softens the pedal under heat. Change it at the interval your chassis manufacturer specifies (typically once a season or before major events). - We stock Putoline DOT 4 Brake Fluid 500 ml.
Cleaning. - Between sessions, wipe the disc and caliper visible surfaces with a clean rag and a light spray of brake cleaner. Never spray brake cleaner directly at pad friction material or contaminate pad faces with any oil, chain lube, or tyre-warmer fluid. - We stock Xeramic Brake Cleaner 500 ml.
Hardware. - Check pad-support pins, retainers and springs when you change pads. Cheap parts, big influence on how the pads sit and wear. - Inspect caliper pistons for smooth retraction — a piston that sticks out is the most common cause of one pad wearing much faster than the other.
Heat management on hot venues. - If your circuit builds a lot of brake temperature (long straight into a heavy corner, hot ambient), a disc cooler makes a measurable difference to consistency across a stint. We stock the OTK Rear Brake Disc Cooler, which fits current OTK systems.
Storage. - Fresh pads should be kept in their packaging until fit. Loose pads in a toolbox pick up oil, dust, and knocks that shorten pad life. Discs should be stored flat, dry, and away from anything that might contaminate them.
How to choose — step by step
If you scrolled here first, this is the short version:
- Identify the caliper family, not the chassis year. OTK BSD/BWD (current), OTK 2004–2016, Kellgate GTK, CRG VEN 05/CR1, Kart Republic/Parolin, TB-Kart/X-Kart, Synergy/Birel/CL/CompKart, or Freeline (by dimension).
- Pick a compound to match your driver and track. - Junior, cadet, or club racer in mixed conditions → Standard (SBP) or Freeline organic. - Heavier senior, hot circuit, or long stints → Hard (LC) or Freeline sintered. - Sprint races, qualifying focus, willing to change pads more often → Ultimate (CFB) or Freeline sintered.
- Buy fluid and cleaner at the same time if it's been a while. Fresh DOT 4 and a wipe-down before you bed the pads makes the whole system feel like it belongs to a different kart.
- Bed the pads properly. Three progressive-loading laps beat any lap-time gain you'll get from an aggressive compound that's been glazed on install.
- Log what you fit and when. A single line in your setup book — "Round 3, fitted Precision Ultimate CFB, bedded, changed after 4 rounds" — turns pad choice from guesswork into data across a season.
