Kart Chain Maintenance Guide 2026
Quick answer: For any UK non-gearbox kart — Cadet, TKM, X30, Rotax, OK, IAME Water Swift, MightE — you must run a 219 pitch chain. That's not a manufacturer preference, it's Motorsport UK NCR 2026 Chapter 18 Appendix 8 Article 35.15. Match the chain to the engine's published tension figure, replace sprockets when the maker tells you to, fit a compliant chain guard, and never lubricate the chain while it's turning. The rule that decides everything: 219 pitch

Motorsport UK's National Competition Regulations for 2026 are unambiguous. NCR 2026 Edition 4, Chapter 18, Appendix 8, Article 35.15 states:
"Non-gearbox Karts must use a 219 pitch chain only."
219 pitch means each chain link measures 7.774 mm (0.306 in) from pin to pin. That covers every UK class in the Karting Yearbook 2026 except KZ2/KZ (gearbox) and Superkart 250 — neither of which the guide below applies to. The regulation is confirmed in the NCR 2026 Ed.4 Chapter 18 Appendix 8, and 219 as a specification is documented by IAME's X30 assembly manual, the IAME KA100 installation manual, Rotax's 125 MAX installation manual and CZ's 219 chain specification.
There is no legal alternative pitch for UK non-gearbox racing. If a supplier offers you a "close-enough" 25H chain for a kart, it isn't close enough.

Chain guard and clutch cover are mandatory

Two Blue Book articles buyers regularly miss:
NCR 2026 Ed.4 Ch.18 App.8 Art.35.12:
"Effective protection must be provided over the top and both sides of the exposed transmission chain (or belt) and sprockets and extend to at least the lower plane of the rear axle."
NCR 2026 Ed.4 Ch.18 App.8 Art.35.14:
"Clutches on non-gearbox Karts must be covered preferably by metal guards."
Sprocket protectors (Art.35.11) are permitted in all classes but must not be metallic.
A chain guard is not a "club-level nice-to-have" — it's a scrutineering point at every Motorsport UK-permitted event. If your current guard is cracked, cable-tied or missing its rear-axle-plane coverage, it will fail scrutineering.
Sealed (O-ring) vs non-sealed — how to choose
Both are legal for UK karting. Neither is mandated by class regulation.
Non-sealed — lighter, cheaper per unit, changed frequently. Dominant in Cadet, TKM and the sprint end of X30 and Rotax paddocks. Choose non-sealed if you're a serious club/championship racer who inspects and replaces the chain every 15–20 running hours.
Sealed / O-ring — heavier by roughly 8–12% depending on maker, longer service life, holds lubricant between the plates. Rotax has an explicit manufacturer preference: the Rotax 125 MAX installation manual states "BRP-Rotax recommends O-ring drive chains by ROTAX Premium."

Chain tension — by engine, not by rule of thumb
There is no single karting tension figure. Every engine manufacturer publishes its own. Get the wrong figure and you either over-tension (drivetrain drag, premature bearing failure) or under-tension (chain climbs the sprocket, jumps or breaks at load).

Set tension on a cool engine with the driver not in the seat, unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. Recheck after the first heat cycle: 219 chains stretch measurably in their first 30 minutes of running.
Sprocket replacement policy — brand-by-brand, not universal
The single most common wrong assumption is "you always replace sprockets and chain together". That's true for some brands, guidance for others, and unsupported for the rest.
Replace as a set (mandatory)
- RK: "Please replace the front and rear sprocket when replacing the chain."
Strongly recommended
- CZ: "With a new chain, it is always better to use both new front and rear sprockets."
Not specified as a set-replacement rule
- D.I.D: warns about worn sprockets causing rapid chain wear, but publishes no "replace as a set" instruction.
IC Kartstore's position: if you're running RK, budget for the sprocket set. If you're running D.I.D or CZ, inspect the sprockets first — replace when tooth profile shows hooking or when the reference notch is visible. New chain on worn sprockets is the fastest way to write off a new chain, whichever brand you buy.
Chain elongation — the numbers, honestly attributed
No chain manufacturer publishes a karting-specific elongation percentage. What they do publish is general engineering guidance that a karting mechanic can apply.
The D.I.D chain maintenance guide publishes the following wear limits, expressed as percentage elongation of a measured section:

Most UK karts sit in the 61–80T rear range, which puts a non-sealed 219 chain at a 1.2% wear limit and a sealed chain at 1.0%. Measure across 20 pitches (160 mm nominal); replace when the measurement exceeds the limit.
These are D.I.D's general engineering figures applied to karting — they aren't karting-specific claims. A more usable karting-paddock rule of thumb comes from Vortex/OTK, whose ROK GP owner's manual publishes "Chain — Change — After 20 hours" as a service schedule.
Combine the two: change on hours, verify on elongation.
Lubrication — what to use, what not to use

Do not use on any sealed / O-ring chain:
- Petrol, kerosene, diesel
- Brake cleaner, carburettor cleaner
- Anti-rust penetrating sprays
Both RK and CZ publish this restriction explicitly — those solvents attack the elastomer seals and destroy the chain's sealed lubrication.

Apply to a cool, clean chain. Rotate the chain by hand (never with the engine running — see next section). Let the lube penetrate before track time.
Never lubricate a chain in motion
NCR 2026 Ed.4 Ch.18 App.8 Art.35.10:
"The Kart must not be started while a driver or Mechanic is putting oil on the transmission chain."
This is a hand-injury clause. A running kart can pull an operator's hand into the chain guard in under a second. Apply lubricant only to a stationary drivetrain.
Championship-specific rules you might not know
- IAME Series (IAME Series 2026 Technical Regulations): "Only IAME original Z10/Z11/Z12/Z13 sprockets are allowed." This is a front sprocket brand control on IAME series events. Aftermarket front sprockets fail scrutineering.
- Rotax Max Challenge: no chain brand control, but Rotax's own manual recommends O-ring construction.
- Super One, BKC IAME, BKC Rotax, NKC: no chain brand controls beyond the NCR 219 pitch requirement.
- All UK series: chain guard and clutch cover to NCR Art.35.12/35.14, sprocket-protector to Art.35.11 (non-metallic).

Common failure modes — and what they usually mean

If a chain has snapped on you, don't refit the broken chain even if the master link looks reusable. Discard and replace.
