Quick answer: For any UK karting race under Motorsport UK rules, buy a helmet homologated to a standard listed in NCR 2026 Ed.4 Chapter 9 Article 7. Under-15 drivers (all Cadet and Bambino) must wear a Snell-FIA CMR/CMS helmet at ≤1,550 g. From the 15th birthday the full senior list opens, and CMR/CMS helmets remain valid. FIA 8878-2024 is the current karting-specific FIA standard; Snell K2020/K2025 are the current karting Snell standards; FIA 8859-2024 and 8860-2018 are the current top-tier auto standards accepted for senior karting. Motorcycle standards (ECE 22.05/22.06, DOT) are not accepted. If unsure, send us head circumference (cm), class or event, and where you'll be racing.

How the 2026 NCR structures accepted helmet standards

Start with the driver’s head measurement — not age or kart class

Kart helmets in Motorsport UK-regulated karting must carry a homologation label listed in NCR 2026 Ed.4 Chapter 9 Article 7. The article publishes four separate lists, and understanding which list your driver falls into is the whole game.

List (a) — All Motorsport UK national events (car, kart, rally, speed): FIA 8859-2015, FIA 8860-2010, FIA 8860-2018, FIA 8860-2018-ABP, FIA 8859-2024, FIA 8859-2024-ABP, Snell SA2015 (not valid after 31.12.26), Snell SA2020, Snell SA2025.

List (b) — Motorsport UK national kart racing events, with the exception of kart drivers under 15 (Cadet and Bambino): FIA 8878-2024, Snell K2015, Snell K2020, Snell K2025, and — on the second page of the article, p.356 — the four Snell-FIA children's standards CMR2007, CMS2007, CMR2016 and CMS2016. This is the list that opens from the driver's 15th birthday.

List (c) — International events: refer to FIA Karting regulations directly.

List (d) — Kart drivers under 15, Cadet, Bambino and Junior drivers: a closed list containing only CMR2007, CMS2007, CMR2016 and CMS2016, subject to a maximum helmet weight of 1,550 g, checkable at any point during an event.

Two consequences follow that catch parents and Junior drivers out most often:

  1. The under-15 restriction is by calendar age, not class. The NCR wording is "Kart Drivers under 15 years of age" — actual birthday. An X30 Junior aged 12–14 is still on list (d); on the 15th birthday, mid-season, list (b) opens. Yearbook class eligibility runs on calendar-year terms (Motorsport UK Karting Yearbook 2026 v1.1); the helmet rule doesn't.
  1. CMR2016 is not a Cadet-only standard. It sits in both list (b) and list (d), so any driver aged 15 or over may keep wearing a CMR/CMS helmet if it fits. FIA Karting confirms: "Helmets that meet the Snell-FIA CM/CMH Standards may continue to be used by drivers after 15 years of age without limitation" (FIA Karting Technical Regulations 2026, Art. 7.1). The real ceiling is head size: Snell CM2016 cannot certify above 59 cm.

How to check a helmet's homologation: every accepted helmet has a woven or stamped label sewn into the internal lining giving the standard, homologation number and date. Scrutineers inspect the label; fake or removed labels void approval.

International racing caveat. If the driver may race internationally in 2026:

  • CMR2007/CMS2007 are not in FIA Karting Art.7.1 — for under-15s racing abroad, buy CMR2016 or CMS2016.
  • Snell K2025 and SA2025 are UK-legal but not yet in FIA Karting Art.7.1 — for international entries, choose Snell K2020, FIA 8878-2024, 8859-2024 or 8860-2018.
  • CIK bulletin (from 1 July 2026): an under-15 with head circumference over 59 cm may use an over-15 helmet at CIK-FIA events, capped at 1,500 g (CIK bulletin). No NCR equivalent — for UK racing an under-15 stays on list (d); a large-headed Cadet needs a top-of-range CMR/CMS or a scrutineer conversation.

The Diamante Premium K is one of the small number of FIA 8878-2024 karting helmets on the market and delivers that certification at excellent value for money. The Diamante Kart pair is one of the very few currently-produced CMR2016 helmets in the UK — a legitimate choice for Cadet, Junior 15+ and adults within the 59 cm ceiling. Bell

Bell's karting range includes the Bell RS7-K and RS7-K Carbon — both FIA 8878-2024 and on the current FIA TL108. Good pick for a senior driver wanting the current top-tier FIA karting standard from an established name.

Arai

Arai's karting range is dominated by K-family Snell K-series helmets. Use Arai's own size chart on the target model — the paddock claim that "Arai runs small" isn't consistent with their published charts.

Schuberth

Schuberth's karting-relevant range includes models on FIA TL108; a premium option where cost is secondary.

Sizing: measure once, order once

Manufacturers publish size charts by head circumference in cm. Shell size (S/M/L) is a category; the numeric size (54, 55, 56 …) is the actual internal circumference.

How to measure:

  1. Wrap a soft tape 2 cm above the eyebrows and just above the ears (the crown line)
  2. Read in cm — don't round down
  3. Measure twice, use the larger reading

Read the chart on the target model, not "shell M" across brands. Adult ranges sit at 54–63 cm; CMR2016 tops out around 59 cm (Snell CM2016).

Fit-check procedure: the seven steps

Ready to choose — or ask us first

Try on for at least 5–10 minutes, then run through:

  1. No rocking — hold front and back and try to rotate. It should move the scalp with it, not slide
  2. No hot-spot pressure — firm and even. A single point becomes a headache after 15 minutes
  3. Chin strap snug — one finger's clearance, no more
  4. Cheek pads press lightly — slight speech muffle, not painful
  5. Retention roll-off — with strap fastened, tilt head fully forward; helmet must not slip back over the crown
  6. Full peripheral field — visor opening covers the steering wheel and overtaking gantries
  7. Homologation label — must show the standard, number and date the class requires

Any "not quite right" on step 1, 4 or 5 is a wrong fit. Don't try to break it in — padding compresses by the fifth or sixth wear.

Homologation timeline for buyers

  • Snell K2025 — in force since 1 October 2025; absent from FIA Karting Art.7.1, so choose K2020 or FIA 8878-2024 for international karting
  • Snell SA2015 — MSUK accepts until 31.12.2026 only; do not buy in 2026
  • Snell SA2025 — UK-legal (list a); absent from FIA Karting Art.7.1
  • FIA 8859-2024, 8860-2018, 8878-2024 — current-generation FIA standards, valid UK and international
  • CMR2007 / CMS2007 — MSUK accepted, but not in FIA Karting Art.7.1. Production ceased 2017 — do not buy new
  • CMR2016 / CMS2016 — MSUK accepted under (b) and (d); FIA Karting accepted at any age

Future-proof picks: CMR2016 for under-15s (and older drivers ≤59 cm), Snell K2020 or FIA 8878-2024 for senior karting, FIA 8859-2024 or FIA 8860-2018 for cross-discipline (cars + karts).

Used helmets: don't

There's no blanket Snell 5-year expiry — retirement depends on use, storage, impact history and manufacturer guidance. But Motorsport UK is explicit on impact history: any helmet that's been struck must be treated as compromised. Because a used helmet's impact history can't be verified, it can't be reliably certified for MSUK-permitted karting. Buy new, or a certified ex-demo direct from the manufacturer. A rejected helmet at scrutineering is a wasted race day.

Care and retirement

  • Store in the supplied bag, away from petrol vapour, direct sun and ozone-emitting devices
  • Clean the lining to manufacturer guidance — some are removable and washable, some aren't
  • Never dry on a radiator or in direct sunlight; never apply solvent to shell or padding
  • Retire after any significant impact, if padding no longer springs back, or if the shell cracks or delaminates

For FIA-sanctioned events, check the current Technical List and event supplementary regulations before buying an older FIA-standard helmet.
